Indigo De Souza’s ability to soar has never been in doubt. Her voice is one of the biggest in indie rock these days, filling songs with a highly relatable sense of heartbreak. With “Heartthrob”, the first single for her new album Precipice, she channels her voice into something more sanguine. Sure, there’s still lingering scars from a past relationship (and her house getting flooded from Hurricane Helene last fall), but she propels herself past the pain through vivid daydreams. Her repeated chants of “I really put my back into it”, combined with some phenomenal guitar work at the song’s crescendo, supercharge the song to levels De Souza previously hasn’t reached. If she keeps going at this pace, she’ll find her heartthrob in no time, and maybe the rest of us will too.
Verdict: Sky-High/10
