Lizzo always had something her progenitor Meghan Trainor never had: charisma. Listen to “Juice” or “Truth Hurts” and tell me the Minnesotan isn’t just dripping with character, no matter how uninventive her thoughts on self-empowerment are. Not everything has to be so deep, and that’s what made so much of her early music fun. For whatever reason Lizzo and her producers have seen fit to strip her of much of that character over the last few years, and “Love In Real Life” sadly continues that trend.
With an indie rock instrumental the Strokes would be embarrassed to use, Lizzo does her usual thing, like how modern love sucks and the need to find something real. But she’s never sounded this generic, choosing to sing in the most boilerplate fashion across the track. This is a lifeless performance made worse by an especially empty set of platitudes across the lyrics. It’s a troubling path Lizzo continues to find herself on, sacrificing even more of her soul for… I’m still not sure what.
Verdict: Not Worth Your Time/10
