What music aficionado doesn’t love Record Store Day? It’s one of those beautiful days where fans all over the world wait together for hours to grab those special pressings, those cool colored vinyl or, in recent years, the new Taylor Swift exclusive drop. This year I was back in Norman, Oklahoma to peruse what Guestroom Records had to offer, and I highly recommend checking them out if you’re ever in the Sooner State. And a special shout out to Melissa and Piper who waited with me for three hours to get into the store to get their Taylor Swift 7”. Below is what I picked up on a day where my wallet probably hated me but my brain definitely didn’t. A link to each record’s RSD page is included.
You know her, you love her, she took RSD off last year but she’s back with a… vengeance? Whatever the case, there were plenty of people in line just for this 7”, which the Guestroom owners made sure to announce they had plenty of. Not my favorite T Swizzle song but it’s a cool white vinyl so I said “might as well”!
Waxahatchee - Much Ado About Nothing/Mud & Next To Me 7”
A couple of b-sides to Waxahatchee’s excellent last album Tigers Blood. No fun colors, just fun Americana music.
Talking Heads - Live On Tour ‘78
Of course if there’s a new Talking Heads release I’m going to buy it. This live show was recorded in Cleveland in 1978 (appropriate) and features mostly songs from More Songs About Buildings And Food, as opposed to last year’s Talking Heads live album concerning Talking Heads ‘77.
Air - Moon Safari Live & Demos
Moon Safari is one of my favorite albums of the 90’s, so a treasure trove of demos, live recordings and covers was a must. It’s a slick white vinyl to boot.
Panda Bear - Venom’s In 7”
This one I was very happy to find a copy of. Panda Bear’s latest album is his best in a long time, but only 750 copies were printed of this 7” single of that album’s 7th track. Thankfully Guestroom had not one, but two copies by the time I got in as around the 75th person in line.
Queen - De Lane Lea Demos
These five demos were the recordings that got Queen their record deal, with all five turning up on the group’s self-titled debut. It’s interesting hearing them in such a raw form, especially the b-side tracks “Jesus” and “Liar”.
Vegyn - Blue Moon Safari
This one was an impulse buy, as I had no clue there were multiple Moon Safari-related releases this Record Store Day. It’s a remix album that keeps things pretty similar to the original after first listen. The blue vinyl is a good choice too.
The only thing I missed out on was the Charli XCX Guess 7”, but when I was able to get so much of what I wanted, it’s hard to be disappointed. Already can’t wait for next year’s RSD and RSD Black Friday this November!
