It takes a lot to overcome a bubblegum bullshit debut like “Obsessed”. It’d have been easy for Addison Rae to return to making Tik Toks and forgetting that entire episode happened, but as evidenced by her recent string of singles, she’s capable of much, much more. “Headphones On” is the latest branch on a pop tree that has its roots in several places; this one finds solace in 90’s trip hop Moby might approve of. Rae’s voice is as cool as the Icelandic vistas of the song’s music video, finding an escape from familial issues and more by putting those headphones on and vibing out. It’s nuanced in a different way than glittery singles “Diet Pepsi” and “Aquamarine”; not the deepest lyrically but quite addicting. It’s another sign there’s plenty more under the hood of the busted car her musical career began in.
Verdict: Björk Is Smiling Somewhere/10
