SONG REVIEW: Lorde - "What Was That"
If it wasn't broke, just do it again, right?
Nothing about Solar Power worked for Lorde, while everything about Melodrama worked. So it’s a pretty natural inclination for the artist and her fans to want to return to what worked, right? “What Was That”, Lorde’s first single since that summer bummer four years ago, is pretty clear in its intentions to get back to the heights of her sophomore LP. Its bumping synths groove along, moody as all get out as Lorde relives the best and worst moments of a past relationship at pell mell speed. It’s a good pop song for sure, though it’s content to just come close to a song like “Green Light” rather than expand its horizons. Lorde broke the formula and puts the pieces back together here, making it a reconstruction more than an original work of art. But I’m here for Lorde being back in her bag as opposed to smoking weed on beaches. She’s a millennial luminary after all; it’s about time she started acting like it again!
