When a sound works, a sound works. Nation of Language have been making more or less the same style of 80’s-influenced analog synthpop for a few years now, with enough wrinkles between each record to keep things interesting. “Inept Apollo” is their first single since 2023, and their first for new label Sub Pop. It’s cool to see the group signed to a bigger label after growing their craft for several years. But “Inept Apollo” shows the band is still very much in control of their sound, at the whims of no one but themselves. The synths will remind you of New Order’s best as Ian Richard Devaney’s strong voice guides you through a typical bout of uncertainty. Bigger things await the New York trio; by being themselves, they’re getting there in no time.
Verdict: Quite Adept/10
