I’ve been reading a fantasy series lately called The Locked Tomb, where necromancers can absorb the soul of their cavaliers to become all-powerful Lyctors of the Necrolord Prime. With that in mind, consider Turnstile’s latest double-single for their next LP as the two entities before they combine into one immortal being. “SEEIN’ STARS” is the necromancer, dulcet in its melody as it swims through the harmonious side of the band’s approach to hardcore. “BIRDS” is the cavalier, a typical rough and rowdy affair where Brendan Yates’ vocals get back to charging up a crowd to mosh. They’re two solid songs on their own, but each song lacks what the other has. A Lyctor requires both souls and a great Turnstile song requires both elements, a la much of GLOW ON or previous single “NEVER ENOUGH”. One sound doesn’t need to murder the other like in the books, but it sure makes things a lot more interesting when it does.
Verdict: An Incomplete Lyctorhood/10
