SONG REVIEW: underscores - "Do It"
This rising hyperpop star continues to shine.
Hyperpop has reached that place in culture where mainstream stars use it as window dressing for their blasé output. Couple that with the end of PC Music, and who’s the future of the genre? I’d throw my vote towards underscores. She’s one of the most exciting voices the very-online genre has ever seen, and after hearing her feature on Oklou and Danny Brown songs this year, she’s set a high bar for her solo material. Thankfully “Do It” clears that bar in spades. Like the best hyperpop minds out there, underscores pulls from 2000’s pop, vaporwave, dubstep and a litany of other genres to make a mind-bending instrumental that’s as abrasive as it is addicting. She’s a capable vocalist to, never getting buried underneath the litany of crunchy noise thrown our way. With a new album on the way, underscores has a clear path to be one of not just hyperpop but pop music’s most unpredictable, entertaining voices for years to come.
Verdict: It’s Done/10
