It’s wild to think that we can be nostalgic for 2015, but yeah, that was 10 years ago. There’s plenty to be nostalgic about from ten years ago, but for me, Ed Sheeran’s pop music isn’t one of them. His second single for Play (no, not a Moby tribute album) waxes poetic on finding an old phone and all the memories within. It’s a little silly to be so nostalgic when this song is pretty much exactly the kind of sappy acoustic song he’s been making ever since he got popular. But credit is where credit is due: Ed’s not trying to be something he’s not, as in a “sexy” synthpop vampire or someone who improves a Taylor Swift song. It’s not my kind of thing, but I can respect (or forget) a mediocre pop song much more than an annoying one.
Verdict: Half Charged/10
