Some of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s best musical moments feature some memorable narratives. Who could forget the trip to Mars/Hell the band took us on 2019’s Infest The Rats’ Nest? The second single for their 27th(!) LP Phantom Island follows suit with a story of its own, with multiple members contributing vocals about a pilot seeing visions mid-flight and surviving an ensuing crash. No, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but who cares when the song is this much fun? “Deadstick” builds on the loose jam rock from last year’s Flight b741, adding in an expansive brass section throughout one of the band’s liveliest instrumentals in quite some time. The group’s impeccable chemistry is on full display here, helping the track come together like the intro to the best 1970’s TV show you’ve never seen. Whatever the nonsensical plot of that show is, I know I’d watch it.
Verdict: Tuesdays At 7:20 On NBC/10
